Too much is at stake in sub-Saharan Africa and around the world. Everyone, everywhere deserves to have access to the basic quality health care they need. And yet…
A health crisis…
Due to global health funding cuts, millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa are not able to access vital health services and are getting sick and dying from illnesses that are entirely preventable and treatable.
…and a jobs crisis…
Up to 50% of community health workers across Africa could lose their jobs as a result of funding cuts—limiting access to treatment and care, putting millions of lives at risk, and causing the loss of livelihood.

Diseases don’t respect borders, making it likely there will be a global resurgence of diseases that have been eradicated or contained—perhaps even another pandemic. The impact, including on the global economy, will leave us all worse off.

Stopped health services
Almost 450,000 people have lost access to m2m health services as a result of the funding cuts, including services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, help orphans and vulnerable children and adolescents, and tackle tuberculosis.
Loss of jobs
Hundreds of m2m community health workers have been laid off since the funding cuts were announced in January 2025. Almost all of these are African women living with HIV, and many are the primary breadwinners for their families.
Programme closures
m2m has had to close four programmes in three countries (Lesotho, South Africa, and Zambia) due to terminated contracts. That has caused a sharp reduction of community health workers and health services that communities and clinics value and rely on.

Ensuring Health for All
m2m will continue to use our proven and impactful community-based, peer-led model to help to end AIDS and reduce preventable illnesses and death—by ensuring everyone has access to essential care.
Strengthening Health Systems
We remain committed to making Africa’s health systems stronger, more sustainable, and resilient. We are building capacity through technical assistance and advocating for more paid community health workers to address the critical shortage of health workers on the continent.
Delivering Impact
m2m will not stop delivering remarkable impact. That includes helping keep alive more than three million at-risk women and children since 2001, and achieving virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV among our enrolled clients for 10 years in a row, with a transmission rate of 0% in 2023.
Pursuing New Funding
While m2m is reducing our footprint, we are committed to the communities we still serve and to reaching new ones, and are working with current and prospective partners to secure more funding.
