On Thursday 5th of December, we lost one of the most beloved and inspirational leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela.  Everyone at mothers2mothers is deeply saddened by his passing and we offer our condolences to his family and loved ones, the people of South Africa, and the world.  During this time of mourning, we celebrate Mandela’s remarkable life and his many accomplishments, including how he raised awareness in South Africa and internationally about the HIV/AIDS pandemic.  The attention he brought to the great devastation the virus was causing in Africa helped bring HIV/AIDS out into the open and defy the stigma and shame associated with it.   In his words…
“AIDS today in Africa is claiming more lives than the sum total of all wars, famines and floods and the ravages of such deadly diseases as malaria … We must act now for the sake of the world.”— Nelson Mandela, in a closing address at the 14th International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, 2002.
Let us give publicity to HIV-AIDS and not hide it, because the only way to make it appear like a normal illness, like TB, like cancer, is always to come out and to say somebody has died because of HIV,” Nelson Mandela, in 2005, after announcing that his sole surviving son had died of AIDS.
