From Victim to Survivor – m2m Mentor Mother Speaks at +SocialGood Event

IreneAtSocialGoodEventm2m Mentor Mother and spokeswoman Irene Nkosi brought many people in the audience to tears at the Healthy Women & Children +SocialGood event in Johannesburg on June 30th. She shared her story (which you can watch below) of how she overcame childhood abuse and an HIV diagnosis while pregnant, and is now an empowered mother of an HIV-negative baby who is a source of strength and inspiration to her family and community.
The two-hour, interactive +SocialGood event – which was a partnership between the United Nations Foundation, Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), and Johnson & Johnson – highlighted progress and promoted accelerated action on women’s and children’s health as the time frame for reaching the Millennium Development Goals draws to a close and the focus moves into the post-2015 era.
The programme featured a series of conversations on health issues related to Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH). Irene was invited to be one of five storytellers who shared their personal experiences on specific RMNCH issues, including the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, which is what she discussed.
