Crown Princess Mary of Denmark visits mothers2mothers

1eeeee0e1c67ca0498ea517d51b6294eCrown Princess Mary of Denmark, together with Minister for Trade and Development Mogens Jensen, met with Mentor Mothers and toured the mothers2mothers (m2m) site at Khayelitsha CHC, a health centre located in a township outside of Cape Town, on Monday, 3rd November. The special guests were also welcomed by m2m President and CEO Frank Beadle de Palomo and Dr. Anthony Hawkridge, Khayelitsha Health District Director.
a752bed8e7ef20c0a364f3e92d3082dcDuring the visit, the Crown Princess participated in a round table discussion with m2m Site Coordinator Nopinky Matinise, Mentor Mothers Sinazo Yantolo and Phumeza Dyantyi, Facility Manager Mr. David Binza, and Maternity Unit Manager Sister Mdludlu, where discussions focused on HIV-related stigma still prevalent in many communities in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the involvement of youth in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Nopinky and her team of Mentor Mothers shared their experiences facing stigma due to their HIV status, and how they now support pregnant women and new mothers through similar challenges in their jobs at m2m. They also talked about youth living with HIV and what m2m is doing at that site, and ones just like it, to ensure at that mothers of any age are kept healthy and their babies are born free of HIV.
Princess Mary is a global advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights. She is a member of the High Level Task Force for ICPD (International Conference on Population and Development) and is a patron of the UN’s Population Fund (UNFPA).
