Mandela Day: m2m Champions Dignity for Cape Town’s Homeless

This week, we celebrate Mandela Day – which is marked every year on Madela’s birthday, 18 July. It’s a day that transcends a calendar date, and serves as a powerful global call to action, reminding us of the transformative power within everyone. As Mandela dedicated 67 years to making a positive impact, this day encourages us to dedicate at least 67 minutes towards serving others – and at mothers2mothers (m2m) Head Office, we are honouring his legacy by spearheading a dignity drive for the homeless.

Recognising the heightened vulnerability faced by Cape Town’s homeless population this winter, m2m’s Head Office staff have donated essential hygiene items, including soap, toothpaste, sanitary products, and warm clothing such as gloves, beanies, and scarves, which will be delivered to organisations offering safe havens for marginalised individuals living on the streets on Mandela Day.

This initiative aims to provide homeless individuals with basic hygiene products, helping them maintain their dignity and self-respect. Dignity is a fundamental human right. For those experiencing homelessness, access to basic hygiene products can make a significant difference in their lives. It promotes health, confidence, and a sense of worth. By organising this Mandela Day Dignity Drive, we hope to make a direct and positive impact on the lives of people who often live on the fringe of society, are often overlooked and forgotten.

As we come together for Mandela Day, let us remember the words of Nelson Mandela: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” At m2m, we are committed to making a difference, embodying the spirit of Ubuntu, and working together to create a more compassionate, healthier, and kinder world.
