Celebrating South Africa’s Heritage Day

Today, South Africa celebrates National Heritage Day, a day when South Africans from all walks of life come together to celebrate the rich cultural diversity and shared history of their nation. This day is also an opportunity to reflect on the struggles and triumphs that have shaped South African identity and to honour the contributions of individuals and communities who have played a vital role in building the nation we know today.

To South Africans, heritage plays an important role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace, and economic development. They celebrate the day by remembering the heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. They stage various events throughout the country such as braai (barbeque) to share stories about each other’s cultures

“To me, Heritage Day means being proud of our many different cultures, languages, and traditions. This day is a day to celebrate where we come from and to stand together as one nation,” shares Esther Mtsweni, m2m South Africa Linkage Assistant.

mothers2mothers: a success story born in South Africa

One of the most inspiring stories that embodies the spirit of Heritage Day is that of mothers2mothers (m2m). Over the past two decades, m2m has grown into a powerful force for change and has expanded from one site in Cape Town, South Africa to today operating in 11 sub-Saharan African countries. And, we’ve employed over 12,000 women as community health workers who have delivered life-changing health services and support to other women and their families, helping us turn the tide against HIV and improve health outcomes while also becoming role models and leaders in their communities.

In 2023, m2m also achieved a significant milestone. For the 10th consecutive year, m2m achieved virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV among our enrolled clients…and, for the first time ever, also achieved something that was once thought to be impossible: a 0% MTCT rate among our enrolled clients. This milestone  underscores the effectiveness of our approach and the resilience of the communities we serve. This success is not just a statistical achievement; it represents countless lives saved and families kept whole.

“I’m honoured to be part of m2m and the organisation’s amazing achievements. This shows how much our team cares about our clients, and I’m proud to work with people who are so committed to the health and well-being of the families and communities we serve,” adds Esther.

m2m’s success is woven into the fabric of South Africa’s heritage, a story of transformation, resilience, and the unyielding belief in a better tomorrow. This Heritage Day, we celebrate South Africa’s heritage by leaving a legacy of a healthy, thriving nation.
