Cycle to Zero Malawi 2016

Cycle to Zero Logo - PNGmothers2mothers (m2m) is an Africa-based NGO working in sub-Saharan Africa engaging government, facility staff, and communities to unlock the potential of mothers and their families through scalable, high-impact interventions.

2016 marks the 15th anniversary of m2m. To celebrate this important milestone and the 1.4 million HIV-positive women reached through our programme, m2m is hosting a Cycle to Zero Challenge Event in Malawi. Founded in Cape Town in 2001, m2m’s programme in Malawi was established in 2008 and now works in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH) across 94 facilities to end transmission of HIV and support the care and treatment of families affected by the virus. The Cycle to Zero Challenge Event is a journey to raise awareness on elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, visiting m2m’s work on the ground and getting to know the players who are working each day to make zero transmission a reality.

According to UNAIDS*, an estimated 1,100,000 Malawians are living with HIV, 130,000 of these are children aged 0-14. In addition, 10% of the population between the ages of 15 and 49 are living with HIV, the majority being women. Malawi was specially chosen in 2011 as the country that launched Option B+, a bold strategy which put all HIV positive pregnant women on treatment, reducing paediatric HIV.

In addition to working in high volume facilities, m2m is also reaching out into communities through the Community Mentor Mother programme. This programme provides a bridge between communities and the formal health care sector. m2m Community Mentor Mothers make use of their bicycles as an essential part of their work in reaching women and families.
