m2m granted UN Special Consultative Status

In December 2021, mothers2mothers’ was thrilled to learn that we had been granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

UN Special Consultative Status

This consultative status is an important milestone on the path to achieving m2m’s primary policy advocacy goal: to improve access to universal health coverage by positioning m2m’s cadre of paid, professionalised, skilled, and fully digitalised CHWs as essential for delivering quality primary health care, and advocating for policies that advance this.

ECOSOC is the main UN body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue, recommendations on economic and social development matters, and implementation of the global development goals agreed at the major UN events. ECOSOC also serves as the main entry point into the UN system for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) such as m2m.

The consultative status gives m2m a formal framework and mandate for participation in all UN structures open to NGOs, including high-level events such as the General Assembly and the Commission on Status of Women. m2m’s status will allow us to use evidence-based policy advocacy to influence policy-makers, including those representing UN member states at the highest international level, by delivering statements, participating in intergovernmental negotiations, and hosting side events at the UN. It also ensures that we can closely monitor and further help to implement international agreements related to m2m’s mission, including the Sustainable Development Goals and the commitment to end AIDS as a public health crisis by 2030.

Stay tuned to see how we use this status to help deliver health, hope, and an HIV-free future.
