Ten Million and Ten Thousand: Two Major 2018 Milestones for mothers2mothers

With 2018 firmly in our rear-view mirror, we are in the process of analysing data to prepare our in-depth internal routine evaluation, to be released in the third quarter of this year.

While you’ll have to wait a little longer for the full results, we’ve calculated that we’ve reached two important milestones in 2018, which we can’t wait to share with you!

Over 10.5M women and children served

From a single clinic in Cape Town, we have now expanded our footprint to operate in eight African countries. As a result, since 2001, we have served* more than 10.5M women and children under two (10,672,485) in Southern and Eastern Africa – that’s almost the equivalent to the population of Rwanda.

The reach of our model is such that, in 2017 alone, 1 in 6 of the world’s HIV-positive pregnant women was seen by a Mentor Mother employed by m2m or our partners.

Over 10,000 women employed

At the heart of our model are the empowerment opportunities for m2m Mentor Mothers through our training and employment. Since we started, we have created job opportunities for over 10,000 HIV-positive women, with around 1,500 currently employed.

The employment enables Mentor Mothers to gain financial stability for themselves and their families. Mentor Mothers put a face to empowered, strong, and healthy HIV-positive women, often becoming role models in their communities, thereby helping to reduce HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

A cause for celebration, but not rest

While we are incredibly proud of these numbers and the incredible people that underlie them, we know that we must still do more to bring health and hope to even more women and families.

Over 7,000 adolescent girls still contract HIV each week globally, the majority in sub-Saharan Africa, and many African families struggle to access vital medical care due to a shortage of 4.2M health workers. We will continue to work to reach women, children and adolescents across Africa and make an HIV-free generation a reality.
