Meet our newest Patron, Rochelle Humes

To coincide with International Women’s Day, mothers2mothers (m2m) is delighted to unveil our newest patron – Rochelle Humes! A well-known TV personality in the UK, Rochelle has supported m2m ever since her visit to m2m’s programme in Kisumu, Kenya in 2016 during a trip with Sport Relief, a biennial charity event from Comic Relief.

There, she was shown around by Mentor Mother Dorcus and met mothers Elsa, Kazia, Mary and their babies who told them about the challenges of living with HIV but also about the support they received thanks to m2m Mentor Mothers.

In her travel blog following the trip, Rochelle recounted: “It was incredible to hear first-hand how invaluable this service is. Dorcus explained to us that many women still do not know about the risks of passing HIV to their unborn babies and that there is still so much stigma around it. The shame is so bad that some women won’t even get tested, unwittingly passing it on to their unborn children. mothers2mothers helps to remove this stigma and provide counselling and support to mothers through their HIV test and results, if it does turn out that they have passed on the virus.”

As a mother of two little girls, Alaia-Mai, 4, and Valentina, 1, Rochelle was deeply moved by what she saw and was keen to get involved and lend her support.

Reflecting on her new role, Rochelle said: “I am so honoured to join m2m as a Patron, having seen their invaluable work first-hand in Kenya in 2016. There, HIV-positive mothers told me about the anxious wait of finding out if their child was HIV-free but also about the hope and support they were given by m2m. Mentor Mothers, like the lovely Dorcus whom I met, have walked in their shoes and stand shoulder to shoulder with them by sharing knowledge and experience. As a mum of two little girls, my priority is that they grow into healthy teenagers. I’m excited to represent these inspiring women who help other mothers make this hope a reality.”
