m2m Retrenchment Update: Supporting Our People Through Organisational Change

This mothers2mothers (m2m) retrenchment update comes at a time of significant disruption across the global health and development sector. Over the past year, major shifts in foreign aid funding and changing donor priorities have created growing uncertainty for non-profit organisations delivering essential health services worldwide—including m2m and our countries of operation across sub-Saharan Africa.

As foreign aid funding patterns change, organisations like m2m have faced increased financial pressure. These global funding shifts have required difficult but necessary decisions to ensure the long-term sustainability of critical health programmes and services.

m2m Retrenchment Update: Roles Affected at Head Office

As a result of these funding constraints, and after careful review, m2m has implemented a round of retrenchments within its headquarters team, affecting 13 roles across key functions, including Finance, Operations, Communications, and Programmes. These decisions were made with care and only after exploring available alternatives.

Acknowledging the People Behind the Roles

Importantly, this m2m retrenchment update reflects organisational realities—not individual performance. Each affected role represents a dedicated professional who contributed meaningfully to m2m’s mission and to the communities we serve.

Over time, these colleagues strengthened health systems, supported country teams, stewarded donor resources responsibly, amplified m2m’s work globally, and helped ensure that our peer-led health model continues to deliver impact at scale. We thank them sincerely for their professionalism, dedication, and service.

Supporting Affected Employees and Future Opportunities

Colleagues transitioning out of m2m are highly skilled, experienced, and values-driven professionals. They bring strong technical expertise alongside a deep belief that health is a basic human right and a foundation for dignity, equity, and opportunity.

As part of this m2m retrenchment update, we encourage organisations currently hiring—particularly across the global health, development, finance, operations, and nonprofit sectors—to consider applications from former m2m staff. We are confident they would add immediate value to teams navigating complexity and change.

Looking Ahead With Purpose

While this moment is challenging, m2m remains committed to its mission and the people who make that mission possible. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our departing colleagues and wish them every success in the next chapter of their professional journeys.
