Leading with Purpose: Meet Chad Rathner, m2m’s Interim CEO

On 1 May 2025, Chad Rathner assumed the role of Interim CEO at mothers2mothers (m2m), succeeding Frank Beadle de Palomo, whose 13 years of leadership helped transform m2m into a globally recognised force for health equity and locally-driven impact.
Chad steps into this role with more than 20 years of experience living and working across the African continent, including serving as m2m’s Chief Operating Officer for more than a decade. He is no stranger to the complexity and nuance of delivering integrated health services at scale—and he brings a results-driven, grounded leadership style shaped by a deep respect for communities and a fierce commitment to m2m’s mission: Health care for families who need it most, delivered by women who know them best.
We sat down with Chad to discuss his leadership approaches, vision for m2m’s future, and the values that guide him during this time of change and opportunity.

Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?
First and foremost, I’m a family guy. I’ve been married for almost 25 years, and have a sporty, active family that keeps me on my toes. I love being outdoors, biking, running, hitting the gym, and watching my kids do what they love. Professionally, I’ve always focused on global health and development, and I’ve lived on the African continent for more than 20 years. I’m also the Vice Chair of the board for Healthy Learners, an organisation which works to improve school health outcomes for children in Zambia.
You’ve taken on this leadership role at a time of significant transition. How are you feeling about this new chapter in your career?
Stepping into this role is a tremendous responsibility—but also an honour. I feel energised by the challenge, deeply committed to our mission, and excited about what we can achieve together.
This year is quite possibly the most challenging time m2m has ever faced. Foreign aid cuts have created a deadly—but preventable—health crisis, and the communities we serve need our services more than ever.
These aid reductions have had an undeniable impact on m2m—we have had to lay off more than 500 people since January, and reduce or stop services across four countries. But we can’t stop, and won’t stop. I am more motivated than ever to forge ahead.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I believe in doing what we say we’re going to do, and in action over rhetoric. I also care deeply about creating a work environment where all of our team members feel valued, inspired, and connected to our shared mission.
What are your immediate priorities as Interim CEO?
Today’s realities require m2m to continually innovate—while staying true to what makes us successful.
My top priority is to protect the essential health services m2m provides to women, children, and families, while also finding ways to grow our impact at scale. As global funding becomes more uncertain, it’s critical that we find smart, sustainable ways to continue delivering care where it’s needed most. We want to build towards our vision of a world where health for all brings opportunity for all.
With that in mind, my immediate priorities include:
- Expanding our use of data and technology, especially through new AI-powered platforms, to improve service delivery and impact.
- Cultivating closer partnerships with governments to help build health systems that deliver sustained, sustainable health outcomes.
- Adapting m2m’s structures to do more with fewer resources, and empowering leaders at every level to make decisions and drive results.
What inspires confidence in you about m2m’s future?
Since our founding in 2001, m2m has overcome everything that has been thrown at us—from AIDS denialism to COVID-19.
We know what works, and how to continually evolve our model. We believe in data, and we have the right insights. We have a resilient strategic plan through 2026. We’re not starting from scratch—we’re refining our focus and building on a legacy of proven impact.
And most importantly, we have the most dedicated and skilled team I’ve ever worked with.
All of those factors, along with our incredible partners, give me immense confidence for the future, even if a hard road lies ahead.
What message do you have for our Mentor Mothers and frontline teams?
You are the beating heart of m2m and are among the best-trained community health workers on the continent. You are deeply loved by your clients, their families, and your communities. You will help us create m2m’s future, even in the face of challenge. I see your strength every day and it inspires me.
What can our partners and global health allies do to support m2m right now?
Believe in us and keep pushing us to be better. Ask us the tough questions, challenge our thinking, and continue to walk with us. Together, we can ensure m2m, as well as our clients and frontline staff, not only survive, but thrive.
